The introduction, in 1998, of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei culture in Santa Catarina State has created new perspectives for this activity. Some of the positive results, such as the productivity up to 2.625kg/ha in a 90 days cycle of culture and rentability up to 79% in two cycles of culture per year, have propitiated a rapid growth of the culture area, going from 24,7ha in 1998 to 300ha in the year 2000. The economic results, the survival and the culture productivity of Litopenaeus vannamei are similar to the one obtained in the northeast of Brazil and other countries of Latin America.
